Update 3/5/2007: Thurston Avenue Bridge Closed Starting March 12, 2007
TCAT Rider Advisory: Effective February 18, 2007
The City of Ithaca begins construction March 20 on a major renovation of the Thurston Avenue Bridge, which links North Campus with Central Campus at Cornell University. Construction on this $8 million project is expected to span more than 18 months, but when it is complete, the bridge will be wider to better accommodate pedestrian, bicycle and automotive traffic. Work on the project is expected to be completed by Oct. 31, 2007.
The upgraded bridge will include wider sidewalks with lighted guard rails, new bicycle lanes and wider traffic lanes. Construction will be performed by Economy Paving Company, Inc, from Cortland, NY and coordinated by the City of Ithaca in cooperation with Cornell Universitys Division of Facilities Services.
Starting March 20 the bridge and the north end of East Avenue will be open to southbound traffic only with only. University Ave will be closed between East Avenue and Sibley/Lincoln access drive for the first two months of the project and Forest Home Drive from the MVR entrance to East Avenue will be restricted to deliveries and emergency vehicles. At times, the bridge also will be closed to pedestrians, who will be asked to use the parallel Beebe Lake footbridge.
